The Salvation Army Hong Kong Island East Corps
My name is Bonnie. My daughter studies at The Salvation Army Centaline Charity Fund School. Time flies. It’s been over a year since I knew The Salvation Army Hong Kong Island East Corps and my loving God on 14 July 2020.
I remember the many hardships and unpleasant experiences that I had before I came to know the Corps: My beloved father passed away, and then my mother suffered from brain haemorrhage. Also, as schools were suspended due to the COVID-19 outbreaks, my daughter could not go to school, and so I couldn’t go to work as I had no one to help take care of my daughter at home. Facing all these conditions in my family and being unable to make ends meet, every single day back then was heartbreaking and hopeless.
Finding the Corps is turning point of my life
Looking back, I am grateful for my daughter studies in a Salvation Army primary school, where I came to know the school social worker. During the toughest time of my life, she introduced me to Ms Law, a staff of Hong Kong Island East Corps. Ms Law always prayed for my mother and for me, which has comforted my soul. The Corps also noticed my daily needs and gave us some supplies, which have calmed my troubled heart.
I had many happy moments in the past year. God answered my prayers. My mother’s physical condition got better, and now she can eat solid food. Also, my elder brother living in the Mainland can help take care of her on her recovery. Later, I met Lieutenant Tsoi and Lieutenant Lam from the Corps. Through the ‘Deliver-a-Meal Project’ of the Corps, I felt encouraged and found joy during my darkest days. Also, Sister Fun of the Corps was so caring that when she knew I had skin problem, she cared for me and taught me how to take care of myself. Now my skin condition gets better. All these made me feel the love in God’s family, and God has helped me understand there are many people around who cherish and care for me.
Celebrating Mother’s Day for the first time
My daughter is now 11 years old, but we have never celebrated the Mother’s Day together in the past 10 years. Last year at the Mother’s Day meeting of the Corps, my daughter spent with me the most unforgettable and touching Mother’s Day.
I want to thank God again, for He blesses me with 2 jobs, which I have been working for a few months now. At first, I was worried I might not cope with the stress of working and taking care of the family, but God gave me strength to take up these 2 jobs, and now I am much less stressed financially.
I used to feel stuck and trapped in my miserable life, but now I realise that I am most blessed because I accepted Jesus as my Lord. In times of greatest troubles, I can earnestly pray to God, and He will grant me strength to face the challenges. In the past, I needed to be helped; now I can help others who are in need. I no longer need to get supplies from my Corps. When I am willing to serve, God gives me blessings and also blesses everyone.
But He (God) said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ (2 Corinthians 12:9)
