On March 28, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar. As of March 30, the death toll has risen to 1,700, with another 3,400 injured. The earthquake caused severe damage in multiple areas, including Mandalay and Naypyidaw, leaving countless families and children homeless and in dire need of water, food, and electricity.
The Salvation Army is deeply concerned about the plight of the affected people in Myanmar and has responded swiftly to the disaster. The Salvation Army has allocated approximately HKD 160,000 to the local Salvation Army for emergency aid to provide essential supplies, medical assistance, and other necessary support to help the affected people through this difficult time. The Salvation Army has offices in five regions of Myanmar and has immediately dispatched personnel to the affected areas to assess the situation and collaborate with local organisations on relief efforts. Captain Saw Samuel, an officer of The Salvation Army in Myanmar stated that their children’s home was also damaged in the earthquake, requiring the temporary evacuation of 19 children, the youngest of whom is only 10 years old.
To further support Myanmar’s post-disaster recovery efforts, The Salvation Army is now calling on the public to donate generously. The funds raised will be directly used for emergency aid and reconstruction work to help the affected people rebuild their homes as soon as possible.
