Last year, The Salvation Army hosted the Charity Orienteering 2023 at the Northern District for the first time. This year, we are moving things to the south – The Salvation Army Orienteering Charity Cup 2024 will be hosted on 23 November 2024 in the Hong Kong Southern District! The Orienteering Charity Cup will be conducted in the format of a two-hour score competition. It will test not only the participants’ physical fitness and endurance, but also their map-reading skills, rational thinking, and teamwork!

The funds raised from the competition will go into supporting The Salvation Army’s community care services, helping those in need in the community (including but not limited to the elderly, homeless, caregivers, low-income families, etc.). As the Army has also been advocating community connection, it is hoped that the public can gain a better understanding of the Southern District’s unique history, culture, and communities with a fresh perspective through this competition, raising public awareness on caring for the community!

Tips

Orienteering competitions can mainly be divided into two types:

Cross Country Event: Participants must visit all control points in order, and the one who completes the course in the shortest time wins.

Score Event: Participants do not need to visit control points in order, nor do they need to visit all control points. The participant who scores the highest points wins (if scores are tied, the one who returns to the finish line first wins). The “Salvation Army Orienteering Charity Cup 2024” adopts the “Score Event” format.

  1. Sportswear
  2. Running shoes
  3. Watch
  4. Small backpack (if needed)
  5. Compass (if needed)
  6. Number bib (provided by the organizer)
  7. Competition map (provided by the organizer)
  8. Electronic recording card (provided by the organizer)

Even beginners who have never tried orienteering can participate in this competition. Since the competition takes place in urban streets, participants can use buildings and landmarks for navigation.

It is recommended that participants learn and practice map reading skills before the competition. To achieve better results, increasing running training is also important.

irst, understand your own pace and ability. When starting and looking at the map, plan your route in advance and be flexible during the competition, including shortening, extending, or changing the route. Ensure you have enough time to return to the finish line within the time limit.

Do not exceed the time limit, as you will lose all the points you have gained.

‘Wild orienteering’ mainly takes place in the countryside and usually follows international orienteering map standards and competition rules. ‘Urban orienteering’ generally takes place in urban streets and uses more relaxed map standards and competition rules.

Since urban orienteering activities often require crossing busy roads or streets, participants must pay extra attention to road safety and follow traffic rules during the competition.
