So Uk Estate – Witnessing Half a Century of Hong Kong History

So Uk Estate is a famous public housing estate in Hong Kong. Why so famous? What has changed in the neighbourhood before and after its redevelopment? The Salvation Army invites you to follow the trails of Hong Kong history in the past half-century through the So Uk Estate Public Community Tours.

The Salvation Army has been supporting So Uk Estate residents who have been affected by the Estate’s redevelopment plan since 2006, and is helping new residents to establish mutual-aid networks, and providing adjustment counselling. Former residents are invited as tour guides, who will explain the history and changes of the Estate. The tours aim to strengthen social cohesion among the residents, and to guide the public to understand and appreciate the district.

Fun Facts:

So Uk Estate was a large-scale public housing estate in the 1960s with a mix of architectural features. During her visit to Hong Kong, HRH Princess Alexandra planted a honeysuckle tree in the estate, subsequently called the Princess Tree. The government began launching the redevelopment of the estate in phases since 2009, but the plaque at the entrance, the triangular white house (the former kerosene store) and a pavilion with a giant mural painted on its arch-shape ceiling (picture) were  retained.
