In Hong Kong, too often we may hear negative comments towards young people, but there are actually many positive stories about youths who care and do good deeds for the community. This issue’s cover story is one of them – being just secondary school students, eight participants of The Salvation Army Youth Lab Project walk out of their classrooms and use their creativity to design a pair of highly functional ‘Protective Gloves’, a product that aims to keep cleaners and rag-pickers from being hurt and infected by sharp objects like injection needles and toothpicks when handling the garbage.

On the other side, a group of young night wanderers have come together through The Salvation Army Tuen Mun Services for Young Night Drifters, who later formed the ‘YND Meanies’ volunteer team. Because of their passion for nature and desire to make an effort for the local natural environment, team members attended the ‘Leave No Trace’ training in Taiwan and brought home their experience and newly acquired knowledge. The team is now organizing series of volunteering activities for children. Through picking up countryside litter together, the team hopes to nurture the young hearts’ love and respect for the nature.

Despite the excessive negative portrayals of youths in the media, around us there are young people who care about the society and try to make changes for the community with their own strengths. Let’s give them encouragement for their good work!
