Share the Taste of Joy and Warm Blessings this Lunar New Year

Enjoying meals at a variety of restaurants might be quite common for many of us. For families living in sub-divided flats, a decent meal can do more than just quench the hunger, but it can also carry a lot of blessings.

Grandma Tung (alias) takes care of her three grandchildren by herself. The four live in a sub-divided flat of poor condition in Sham Shui Po district. High rent has put them under financial stress, and it was Grandma Tung’s daily struggle to get her grandchildren some nutritious meals. She had no spare money to allow her grandchildren to join any extra-curricular activities, and she could hardly afford buying them a bottle of water after sports activities. In those days, what Grandma Tung could do was to try her best to keep the children from starving.

The family’s life began to improve as Grandma Tung received food packs from the Delicious Express Food Assistance Service Project of The Salvation Army Shamshuipo Family Support Networking Team. With two food packs a week, Grandma Tung can use the ingredients freely and cook them in the ways she likes. Now the family can have well-balanced and nutritious meals on their table, and with more variety too – the children look forward to their Grandma’s cooking every day.

The food packs save food costs for the family and now the children can have spare money to join other extra-curricular activities and develop their interests. Their social circle expanded as they can go out with their friends after school. They can even afford treating themselves with something that they could not afford to buy before. The grandchildren are grateful for the new changes and even become more considerate that they would buy some bread home to share with the family, which brings them closer together.

These little changes may not sound special, but they did not come easily for Grandma Tung’s family. With food packs, Grandma Tung no longer needs to worry about her grandchildren not having enough to eat. In fact, it is more than fulfilling their basic needs – the food has brought more liveliness to the whole family. This Lunar New Year, we invite you to support our work, allowing The Salvation Army to continue our frontline services of helping more people in need and sharing joy and warmth with them.
